India announces a new 80,000-seat cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, taking total city capacity to 1.5 lakh — world largest.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed plans for a second major cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, to be built adjacent to the existing Narendra Modi Stadium, which will increase Ahmedabad total cricket seating capacity to over 1.5 lakh — making it the largest cricket-hosting city in the world by capacity. The new 80,000-seat stadium, to be constructed by the Gujarat Cricket Association with central government support, will feature a retractable roof, hybrid turf, and a complete underground parking facility for 8,000 vehicles. Construction is expected to begin in Q3 2025 with a completion target of December 2028. The new stadium will be the primary venue for the ICC World Test Championship finals in 2029 and 2031, which India has secured the hosting rights for.
