India won the Davis Cup for only the second time in their history, defeating Australia 3-2 in the final in Melbourne in a thrilling encounter that required all five rubbers to decide the victor. Ramkumar Ramanathan clinched the title-winning point by defeating Jordan Thompson 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in a third-set tiebreak that left players and support staff in tears on the court. The doubles rubber, won by Satwik-Chirag over Purcell and Peers in four sets, had earlier given India the lead from which they never relinquished the advantage. India captain Zeeshan Ali described the victory as the culmination of three years of comprehensive investment in Indian tennis infrastructure. The last time India won the Davis Cup was in 1974 when Vijay Amritraj and Ramanathan Krishnan led the squad to the historic title.
