Argentina defends the FIFA World Cup 2026, beating England 3-1 in Los Angeles as Alvarez scores twice in a historic final.

Argentina defended their FIFA World Cup title at the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, defeating England 3-1 in the final played at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. Julian Alvarez scored twice and set up Lautaro Martinez for the third, while Harry Kane replied with a consolation penalty to reach 100 international goals before a worldwide audience estimated at 1.6 billion. Lionel Messi, now 38 and playing what is expected to be his final World Cup, was named tournament ambassador and carried the trophy in a ceremonial presentation before the final. Coach Lionel Scaloni called it the greatest achievement in Argentine football history to defend a World Cup title after 44 years. The tournament attracted record revenue of $15 billion and the highest cumulative stadium attendances in World Cup history.
