The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launched the India AI Compute Grid, a publicly accessible GPU cluster comprising 10,000 high-performance accelerators distributed across data centres in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, available at subsidised rates to Indian universities, government research institutions, and DPIIT-recognised startups. The grid, built under the IndiaAI Mission, offers Nvidia H100 and AMD MI300X GPUs accessible through a cloud portal with allocations made through a competitive peer-reviewed grant process. Initial allocation rounds received 1,400 applications from 62 institutions in 18 states. The grid gives Indian researchers affordable access to the same computational scale used by frontier AI labs globally. The government has committed to expanding the grid to 50,000 GPUs by 2027, with dedicated partitions reserved for healthcare, agriculture, and defence research applications.
