Global internet traffic crosses one zettabyte per month for the first time, with AI traffic now 18% of total global data flow.

Cisco Annual Internet Report 2025 confirmed that global internet traffic crossed one zettabyte per month — equivalent to one trillion gigabytes — for the first time in recorded history, driven primarily by AI inference traffic, 8K video streaming, and the explosion of IoT device communications. AI-related traffic, including API calls to large language models, image generation services, and edge inference endpoints, now constitutes 18% of total global internet data flow, up from 3% in 2022. India ranks as the world third-largest contributor to internet traffic growth, behind the United States and China, with per-capita data consumption in India reaching 28 gigabytes per month. Subsea cable capacity investment hit a record $10 billion in 2024, with three new cables connecting India to Europe scheduled for 2026 completion.
