Bogotá: 2026 marks 60 years since the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, considered the most important novel written in Spanish in the 20th century and one of the pinnacles of universal literature. Colombia and the Spanish-speaking world are celebrating the anniversary with exhibitions, special editions, literary festivals, and the imminent premiere of the Netflix adaptation, which promises to be the most anticipated television event of the year.

The novel, first published in June 1967 in Buenos Aires by Editorial Sudamericana, narrates one hundred years of the Buendía family's history in the mythical town of Macondo, a mirror of the history of Colombia and Latin America. With more than 50 million copies sold and translations into 46 languages, it is the best-selling Spanish-language book of all time after Don Quixote.

The Netflix Adaptation

The television adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude for Netflix, produced with the participation of the García Márquez family and with a budget of more than 70 million dollars, is scheduled for release in the second half of 2026. The series is filmed entirely in Colombia, mainly in Cartagena and locations in the Colombian Caribbean, with a 100% Latin American cast.

The production has generated anticipation and also debate: can a series capture the complexity of such a densely literary work? The producers have opted for a free adaptation that maintains the spirit of the book but makes its own creative decisions. Rodrigo García Barcha, the author's son, has participated as executive producer.

García Márquez and Latin America

García Márquez's legacy transcends literature. His figure is a symbol of Latin American cultural identity, of the region's capacity to create works of universal reach from its own realities. In his anniversary year, several Latin American countries have announced educational programs to ensure that new generations read and discuss One Hundred Years of Solitude in the classroom.
