Hampshire College to Close Amid Financial Strain
"Hampshire College will shut down after financial struggles and declining enrollment pressures."
Financial Difficulties and Closure Announcement
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Hampshire College announced on Tuesday that it would be closing later this year. Among its alumni is award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. Due to what the president and the board called "increasingly complex" financial pressure, the school's Board of Trustees decided to close after the fall semester. The school said that attempts to boost enrollment, restructure current debt, and generate additional income from land sales had failed in a statement released by the board and its president, Jennifer Chrisler. "A number of realities are reflected in the reasoning behind this hard vote. In a statement, the college claimed, "The College no longer has the resources to sustain full operations and meet our regulatory responsibilities." Chrisler recognized that the choice was challenging in a different Instagram statement. "We are doing everything to support our students in finishing their studies and to help our faculty and staff navigate what comes next, as this is an extremely painful moment for the Hampshire community," she stated. According to the school, existing undergraduates at the small liberal arts school in western Massachusetts will be able to finish their study at Hampshire or a partner university due to the timing of the closure.
Institutional Context and Transition Initiatives
Since its founding in 1965, the institution has faced difficulties. In 2020, it started a $60 million fundraising effort that brought in a number of significant donations, including a $5 million pledge in Burns' honor. When the college stated in 2023 that students from a Florida institution taken over by conservatives chosen by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis may enroll there, it attracted some notice. According to Hampshire College, students who are in good standing at New College of Florida can transfer there and pay the same tuition as they do in Florida with the benefit of student aid. Each of the two educational establishments is renowned for its progressive, free-spirited pupils, lack of conventional grades, and chances for students to create their own curricula.
Wider Patterns in Higher Education
The school is one of many tiny schools in New England and the nation that have had to close recently. As colleges fight for a declining number of American students, college closures have become more frequent. There are fewer Americans of college age overall as a result of declining birth rates. However, since the COVID-19 epidemic, the proportion of high school graduates attending college has decreased in various states. Higher education now has more supply than demand as a result of these changes. Long-term enrollment declines have put a strain on the budgets of many institutions, particularly small, private ones. In recent years, New England has been particularly heavily struck due to its high concentration of institutions.
