Montevideo: Uruguay received 3,207,536 international tourists between January and November 2025, generating foreign currency revenue of 1,784 million dollars, according to the latest report from the country's Ministry of Tourism. The figures consolidate Uruguay as a reference destination in South America, especially for Argentine, Brazilian, and European travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences in an environment of political and social stability.

Punta del Este continues to be the most visited destination in the country, especially during the southern summer months. However, the country's interior is gaining relevance: cities like Colonia del Sacramento, with its historic district declared a World Heritage Site, and Fray Bentos, home to the Alfredo Koll Industrial Cultural Landscape on the UNESCO list, attract an increasing number of visitors interested in cultural and heritage tourism.

Sustainable Tourism as Competitive Advantage

Uruguay has committed to sustainable tourism as a strategic differentiator. The country generates 98% of its electricity from renewable sources, mainly wind and hydropower, and has implemented a national sustainable tourism certification that is already recognized in European and North American markets.

Agro-tourism and wine tourism are high-growth segments. The Canelones region, known as the Uruguayan Napa, receives increasing numbers of travelers interested in wine tastings, farm stays, and local gastronomy. Uruguayan wineries have gained international recognition for their Tannat variety wines, which have become a hallmark of the country.

Tourist Demographics

Following global trends, Uruguay is seeing a shift in the tourist profile. Travelers over 55 represent a growing proportion of visitors, attracted by wellness tourism, cultural experiences, and slower-paced itineraries. The silver tourism market represents a growth opportunity for destinations that can offer accessibility, service quality, and authenticity.
