Milei Reaffirms Alliance with US and Israel in Jerusalem
Javier Milei at the Knesset during his official visit to Israel
Jerusalem: Argentine president Javier Milei made an official visit to Israel in early April 2026, in which he reaffirmed Argentina's support for US and Israeli policy in the Middle East. In an event at the Knesset, Milei rejected international criticism of Israeli military operations and reiterated his commitment to moving the Argentine embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Milei, who since taking office in 2023 has made alignment with Washington and Israel a pillar of his foreign policy, used the visit to finalize cooperation agreements in technology, agriculture, and defense. Argentina became the first Latin American country to sign a technology cooperation treaty with Israel in the field of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
Regional Reactions
Argentina's stance drew criticism from several Latin American countries. Mexico, Bolivia, and Colombia — which had severed diplomatic relations with Israel in 2024 under their previous governments — expressed rejection of what they described as unconditional support for military actions with a high humanitarian cost. Brazil, for its part, opted for a more moderate stance, reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism.
In the economic sphere, the visit also produced concrete results: an Israeli agricultural technology company announced a 200 million dollar investment in Argentina to develop drought-resistant crops. The agreement is relevant in the context of Argentina's ambition to become an agro-export power with cutting-edge technology.
Domestic Impact
In Argentina, the visit was well received by sectors of the libertarian coalition, although it generated criticism from the Peronist opposition and civil society organizations that expressed concern about the abandonment of the country's traditional non-alignment foreign policy. The Argentine foreign minister defended the strategy noting that alignment with the West is essential to attract investment and reinforce institutional credibility.
