Miami: Fox Corporation announced the acquisition of Tigo Sports Channel's programming and production operations in six Central American countries, marking a significant expansion of the company in the region. The new channel, to be called Fox Channel, will be available in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, and will combine local sports content with international rights.
The new channel will include Fox's international rights portfolio, covering leagues such as the English Premier League, UEFA Europa League, German Bundesliga starting with the 2026-27 season, Liga MX, and the Saudi Pro League. Beyond soccer, Fox plans to offer more than 800 live sporting events per year in Central America in disciplines such as baseball, mixed martial arts, AAA wrestling, NASCAR, and Formula E.
Importance of the Central American Market
Carlos Martínez, Fox's executive vice president for Latin America, stressed that Central America is a region with a deep passion for sports, and that the company is excited to strengthen its presence by offering a first-class service that combines local talent and content with its international rights. Tigo customers in the six countries will continue receiving sports programming under the expanded offering.
The acquisition comes at a time of growing competition in the Latin American sports streaming market, where platforms like DAZN, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video have expanded their presence. Fox is betting on the pay-TV model combined with its streaming platform Fox One, which it hopes to launch in the region in the near future.
Impact on the Sports Ecosystem
Industry analysts note that the arrival of Fox Channel in Central America could professionalize the coverage of local sports, which have historically had less visibility than European leagues on the region's screens. The investment in local production is also expected to generate employment in the audiovisual sector of each country.
