New York: The FIFA 2026 World Cup, to be played from June 11 to July 19 across 16 venues distributed between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is shaping up to be the biggest tournament in the history of soccer. For the first time, 48 national teams will participate in the final phase, with four Latin American teams that have already qualified well in advance: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia.

The expanded format features a first group stage with 12 groups of four teams, followed by a round of sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the grand final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Mexican host cities include Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, each hosting 13 matches.

Economic and Logistical Impact

FIFA estimates the tournament will generate an economic impact of more than 5 billion dollars in the three host countries. For Mexico, the World Cup is especially significant: the country becomes the only one to have hosted the tournament three times in 1970, 1986, and 2026, a historic milestone that the Claudia Sheinbaum government has made a source of national pride.

The USMCA under review and migration tensions between Mexico and the United States complicate logistical coordination, but the three governments have established special fan mobility protocols. More than 1.5 million international tourists are expected in Mexican territory alone, representing the largest tourist operation in the country's history.

Latin American Teams

Argentina arrives as defending world champion following its victory in Qatar 2022. Brazil will seek its sixth world title with a generation of young talents. Uruguay and Colombia complete the Latin American quartet in what promises to be an edition with great regional participation. Spain, which also qualified comfortably, represents Spanish-speaking countries in Europe.
