An exchange of gunfire inside the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge left one person dead and five others wounded, sending shoppers and workers running for safety. Authorities said the shooting was not random but stemmed from a confrontation between two groups that escalated into violence, with some bystanders caught in the crossfire.

Police Chief TJ Morse said five people were taken into custody and there was no ongoing threat. The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. in the mall’s food court after an argument broke out. An officer already at the mall responded immediately, and investigators are now working to determine what triggered the dispute.

Among those injured were three high school seniors from Ascension Episcopal School, according to local officials. Community leaders expressed grief over the incident, describing it as senseless violence that has deeply affected families.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with people running, screaming and hiding in stores and back rooms. Some initially feared it could be a larger incident as the sound of gunfire echoed through the mall. Workers and shoppers sheltered in place until law enforcement secured the area.

The mall was closed for the rest of the day as dozens of police vehicles and emergency responders filled the area. Authorities are asking anyone with video or information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation continues.
