Supreme Court orders all 25 High Courts to live-stream proceedings within six months, citing citizens right to access justice.
The Supreme Court of India issued a landmark directive ordering all 25 High Courts across the country to begin live-streaming their proceedings within six months, citing the fundamental right of citizens to access justice as a public good. The bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, noted that live-streaming of Supreme Court hearings had significantly improved transparency and public trust and that the same principle must cascade to High Courts. The order provides an opt-out mechanism for proceedings involving sensitive matters such as child custody, sexual offences, and national security. The National Informatics Centre has been directed to build a unified live-streaming portal accessible via the eCourts mobile application. Legal observers described the ruling as the most significant judicial transparency reform since the Right to Information Act.
