India gains permanent Observer status at the Arctic Council, unlocking access to governance meetings and new polar research opportunities.
India has been granted enhanced Observer status at the Arctic Council, giving it a permanent advisory seat and access to all working group meetings of the body that governs the world most rapidly changing geography. The Ministry of External Affairs described the development as a milestone in India Arctic policy, which has operated under the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research since 2007. India Himadri research station at Ny-Aalesund in Norway will serve as the operational hub for expanded Arctic engagement. Officials noted that melting Arctic ice is opening new shipping routes that could cut transit time between India and Europe by up to 40%, with the Northern Sea Route becoming commercially viable by the early 2030s. India pledged to contribute climate monitoring data and cryosphere research findings to the Council shared knowledge base.
