Cabinet approves Rs 6,003 crore National Quantum Mission to build 50-1000 qubit computers and quantum networks by 2031.
The Union Cabinet has approved the National Quantum Mission with a total outlay of Rs 6,003 crore over eight years, making India only the seventh country in the world to launch a dedicated national quantum technology programme. The mission targets the development of intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50 to 1,000 physical qubits by 2031, alongside quantum communication networks, quantum sensing devices, and quantum material research. Four Thematic Hubs will be established at premier institutions including IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and TIFR Mumbai. The Department of Science and Technology has already shortlisted 14 startups working on quantum hardware and software that will receive initial grants. Officials said India aims to be among the global top three nations in quantum technology by 2035.
