Turning Point USA's Growth in Schools

Turning Point USA's Growth in Schools Concerns about free speech and religion are raised by Turning Point USA's high school campaign in Republican states. OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — In response to the assassination of co-founder Charlie Kirk last year, Republican leaders nationwide are promoting chapters of the conservative political organization Turning Point USA in all public high schools. They describe this as an attempt to combat the repression of conservative voices in education. The group's support by Republican governors, at least eight of whom have endorsed it thus far, has sparked discussion about free speech in American classrooms. Critics contend that many of the same conservative leaders have attempted to stifle others by enacting laws limiting what educators can say about sex education, LGBTQ+ issues, and other subjects.

Political Discussion and Religious Influence

Political Discussion and Religious Influence Some governors' use of Christianity as justification for their backing of the clubs has exacerbated the tensions. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed her hope that the partnership with Turning Point USA would inspire "the exact type of civic engagement that we want to see" among high school students during a press conference last month. She said that God had worked through Kirk to grow the conservative group. "Learning the principles of freedom and faith that underpin our nation is never too early," she stated.

Student Responses and Issues with Free Speech

Student Responses and Issues with Free Speech That went too far for Lily Alderson, a student at Fayetteville High School in Arkansas. The governor's support, according to Alderson, head of the school's Young Democrats organization, goes against the law prohibiting governments from favoring any one faith. Alderson stated, "We're a public school." "We shouldn't be a state or a school dictating to people what they ought to believe in."

Support for Conservative Student Voices

Support for Conservative Student Voices At the same high school, Lukas Klaus leads the local Turning Point USA chapter. As he sees it, the Republican governors are ensuring conservative voices like his are allowed to be heard. “I’ve heard numerous other stories from around the states of Club America chapters trying to get started where they’re having serious problems with the administration straight-up saying ‘no,’ ” said Klaus. He said he has never heard of a public school disallowing a Young Democrats club.
